Our Promise & Commitment
At Bryn Tanat Hall, sustainability isn’t just something we do, it’s part of who we are.
Nestled in the heart of the Shropshire and Mid-Wales border, we’re passionate about protecting the natural world around us. Our commitment to sustainability is built into every aspect of the estate, from the way we power our buildings to how we care for the land and welcome guests.

Renewable Energy & Low-Impact Heating
We have made significant investments in green energy across the estate. All our buildings are powered and heated using a combination of ground-source heat pumps, solar panels, and a biomass boiler. These systems enable us to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint while providing reliable, comfortable energy for our guests. We continue to monitor and improve our energy efficiency, ensuring that our operations remain as environmentally responsible as possible.
Sustainable Design & Eco-Friendly Construction
Sustainability is at the core of how we build and maintain every part of the Bryn Tanat Hall estate. Our Mercury Eco-Cabin stands as a leading example. Constructed using ThermoWood, a durable and eco-friendly timber treated only with heat and steam, it represents our commitment to natural, non-toxic materials. But this ethos extends well beyond the cabin.
Our Lodge accommodation follows the same sustainable principles. With cedar-clad rooftops and carefully selected natural materials, it blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape while offering a low-impact footprint. The external cladding used throughout the estate is chosen not only for its longevity and insulation benefits but also for its low environmental impact.
Whether you’re relaxing in the Lodge or enjoying an off-grid retreat in the Eco-Cabin, you’ll be surrounded by design that respects the land and tells a story of sustainability.

Water Supply & Stewardship
A key part of our sustainability approach is our private water supply. For years, Bryn Tanat Hall relied on a Victorian-era well drawing from the lower gardens, with water pumped to a hilltop reservoir and distributed by gravity. While rich in history, the original system could no longer meet the demands of a growing estate, especially during summer months, when capacity was limited to around 5,000 litres per day.
In response, we installed two deep wells in 2017, increasing our peak capacity to over 85,000 litres per day. The modern system, fully integrated in 2018, replaced the old Victorian pipework and now provides clean, high-pressure water across the entire estate, including our self-catering accommodation. To ensure the highest standards, our water is tested annually by Powys County Council.
Biodiversity & Land Stewardship
The land that surrounds Bryn Tanat Hall is more than a backdrop, it’s a thriving, living ecosystem that we are committed to protecting and nurturing. Through active land management, we support biodiversity across our woodlands, meadows, and gardens. Initiatives like wildflower planting, no-mow zones, and pollinator-friendly spaces help create safe habitats for birds, bees, butterflies, and other native species.
In 2021, we introduced a dedicated wildlife pond, now home to our resident ducks, Eddie and Daisy. The pond has quickly become a vibrant focal point for biodiversity, regularly attracting visiting swans, Canadian geese, and a variety of birdlife and aquatic species. It’s a peaceful place for wildlife and guests alike, encouraging quiet connection with the rhythms of the natural world. Guests are always welcome to explore our walking trails and witness nature’s work firsthand.
